12 Investigations

A Trial of the Accused: Justice J M C Smit

  • 16 KwaMadala hostel residents are found guilty of involvement in the massacre. Smit finds "no evidence to support the allegation that the police in any way participated or were involved in the Boipatong massacre" and decides that the erasure of videotapes was the result of incompetence & not a deliberate attempt to hide evidence of police complicity in the attack.

A Commission of Inquiry: Justice Richard Goldstone

  • Concludes he did not receive any evidence that led him to conclude that the police were involved in the attack.

Waddington Inquiry

  • An investigation into the role of the police in the investigation of the massacre, finds that police omissions were the result of inefficiency and incompetence rather than part of a deliberate cover-up.
